September-October issue of Catholic Herald Magazine is published; theme is health care, end-of-life issues

The theme of the September-October issue is health care and end-of-life issues. The cover story, “This is holy ground and you walk softly there,” features the personal experiences of Father John Healy, longtime chaplain at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento, about his call to serve the sick and dying for the past 40 years and his involvement in ministry to persons with HIV/AIDS.

Other feature stories include: an interview with Bishop Jaime Soto on why the “new evangelization” is so important to the church; how the Catholic funeral is a celebration of faith; how the diocese plans funeral centers at existing cemeteries to carry on a “legacy of faith”; an interview with William J. Cox on challenges facing the Catholic health care ministry; an informative discussion and interview with Dr. Robert Quadro, medical director of Mercy Hospice, on end-of-life issues and medical treatment; a profile of Redding oncologist Michael Figueroa, who brings his faith on the journey with cancer patients; 12-year-old Crispin Cabrera shares how he was inspired by a pilgrimage to the Holy Land; and the story of Gneal Trevethan, a champion for building and growing respect life ministries.

Bishop Jaime Soto is publisher of the magazine, which is published seven times each year and includes moving faith stories and high-quality photography about Catholics in the diocese as well as news and events of the local church.
