Bishop Soto to celebrate Mass for 30th anniversary of SEARCH retreat movement on Sat., July 28 at St. James Parish in Davis
Bishop Jaime Soto will preside at a 3 p.m. Mass, followed by dinner, on Saturday, July 28 at St. James Parish, located at 1275 B Street in Davis, to mark the 30th anniversary of the SEARCH retreat movement in the Diocese of Sacramento.
The SEARCH lay retreat movement was introduced in the diocese in August 1982 as the first retreat for Latino young adults. At the first retreat, a group of 57 Latino young people participated. Auxiliary Bishop Alphonse Gallegos encouraged SEARCH as he knew the movement when he served as a priest in Los Angeles.
Today’s SEARCH retreats are much like that first retreat, with participants beginning on Friday night and ending on Sunday afternoon. Primarily serving Latino young adults, SEARCH offers three retreat in Spanish and one in English each year, all held at the San Juan Diego Retreat House in Linda. There are about 35 to 50 participants at each retreat.
Interviews with leaders of the SEARCH movement are featured in the cover story of the July-August Catholic Herald Magazine. Digital edition can be viewed at http://www.diocese-sacramento.org or http://www.catholicheraldsacramento.org.
